Tinkarri

Deegholkandi is a village under Bogura district of East-Bengal within the territory of undivided ‘British-India’. All the villagers belonging to different religions are segmented into two localities known as Uttarpara & Dakshinpara. The surrounding villages of Deegholkandi are—Sukhonpukur, Lohagara, Katlahar and a lake named Bogarbil. These are the depiction of a rural locality. Other than the regularities of peasant life Boishakhi fair, fishing, music & kirtan shows, wrestling—their daily life was full of such kinds of fun-enjoyment-celebration. Once it was very close to 1947. Religious insanity and extremism was increasing. Coexistence by generations was rapidly disrupted by the heat of extremism. Suddenly other person, neighbors, even dearest friends becomes almost strangers. The burning and combustion causes degradation of human consciousness. Tinkori—the story of a locality of East-Bengal losing its balance amidst of the then igneous historic reality.

Director’s Note

‘Human is the highest truth, nothing above it’. Boru Chondidas—a Bengali poet, uttered this immortal saying in medieval age. ‘We’ are bearing his legacy. Those ‘we’ are getting cornered continuously; thousand years old history, tradition & struggle and those ‘we’, who don’t accept religious division. The seed of communalism that was sown in our culture by British conspiracy through Bengal partition is still at large. By injecting fear in other communities mind, a certain class of people is determined to divide the society and to create a dark-age atmosphere in our country. But ‘we’ will not allow such a society without free-thought. These ‘we’ are minority in number. Theatre and other marginal art forms we practice just reach handful people. We know, this struggle is tough—but it should not give up.

This play is not a history of partition. It is a story of a person of strong conviction from a particular period, society and place. ‘Tinkori’ is an invocation for making a united society & culture.

Nowadays it is quite challenging to work with large cast– from all aspects. My breath—‘Anuswar’, gave & received that courage. We didn’t left our premise; we didn’t abandon our aspiration for art creation, even in the evil days of pandemic. Porimol Mojumder (Aranyok Natyo Dol), Amlan Biswas (Nagorik Natyosomproday), Aniket Pal Babu (Palakar), Sajib Biswas (Biborton Jashore), Piklu Bakshi (Drishyopot), Parvin Paru (Prachyonat) and ‘Anuswars’—those who have enriched ‘Tinkori’—I bow down before them.
